Peony - June, 2025
Back Story:
I chose to draw this Peony to help me learn techniques used for drawing botanical subjects. Not only did this subject matter give me the chance to try out a new drawing surface, Peonies were one of my mum’s favourite flowers, which was also an incentive to me.
Behind the scenes shows part of the layering process used to create drawings with coloured pencils. The paper used for this drawing is Clairefontaine Pastelmat Board, which has a harsh textured surface that requires multiple layers to be added to help fill and smooth the surface. Check out the images below to see how I worked on each section of the drawing, building up each layer by layer before moving on to the next section.
